Sleep posters!

So as you may know, for my final project at CPIT I focused on Sleep, clearing away misconceptions about it and making my audience see it as a priority. Here are some poster ads, featuring hand-drawn and digitally coloured typography, as well as photography of my awesome classmates. Originally printed in glorious A1.

Also I'm on Behance now, CHECK IT.

...And you can live through anything if Magic made it

I finished studying for my degree on Monday, which is equal parts exciting and terrifying. I learned and grew so much over the last three years. It was sort of a trilogy, or three-act structure, in that there was the bright exciting beginning, the difficult middle period, and triumphant ending. I wouldn't trade any of it. Now here I am, with no set in stone plans for the future for the first time ever. But I'm in the longest sustained period of happiness I've ever had lately and trying my best to stay busy. As excited by change as I am, I've always been secretly scared of it, but I feel ready to face it all now. No matter what, the future's gonna be pretty rad. Hopefully with jetpacks.
May all your dreams come true xoxo

I love this quote too much

"People slap a rating on this thing that you've made!  It’s just so wild! It’s just the craziest thing. I honestly think that that’s the craziest thing in the world, and that goes for like movies and whatever, anything that you have to create something. I think it’s really insane that in how big of a world we live in, that one person would then grade it. It’s insane! That’s crazy, and I just don’t really care for it... I haven’t read a Blood Orange review ever, and I disable the comments on YouTube videos, so I actually have no idea what people are really saying. Because, I mean it’s all kind of meaningless, but if a stranger in the street came up to you and just said: "Your jacket sucks."And then walked away, you’d be like "what the fuck?", and "who are you?", and "I like this and I just put this on..." But it will still bother you. Even though it’s someone who you'll never seen again in your entire life and you never knew them before, you'll be thinking about that, and you'll just be like “Shit, I thought it was really great, but..." So that’s what I think reviews are [like]."
- Dev Hynes (Blood Orange, Lightspeed Champion, Team Perfect) on reviews

Passion Pit- Constant Conversations

I'm really into slow jams at the moment and this is my favourite song of the year so far. With it's falsetto-driven synth-pop, vintage Kanye-esque beats and heart-breaking lyrics, this whole album sounds like it was engineered to be a perfect album for me. AND IT IS.

Maybe better than their first?
I wrote a haiku.

Bloc Party

I drew Bloc Party! Their new album's pretty good, you have to skip the weird "hardcore/metal" songs, but some of the tracks are some of the best songs they've ever written.

I'm on instagram I think

Hey cool, I have instagram and I have know idea how to use it but if you want to see my photos or something search for "garefblackler" on it.
My goal is to only take filter-less photos of actual polaroids and fool the universe. Take that universe!

Four Lords

The four works I made for Georgia's exhibition. So much fun to make, I hope you like them! I'm 21 tomorrow.

Die! Die! Die! are Great Great Great

I forgot how much I love these guys until I saw them live for the first time in ages on Saturday. Easily the best live band in New Zealand, can't wait to see them againn!

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Do you live in Dunedin? You lucky person. My amazing friend Georgia Glass has organised this exhibition and you should go to this because it's gonna be amazing, and it features some never-before-seen works by me being exhibited!! Details!

A few Goodmans

Four portraits of John Goodman, because I recently realised how many great things he's in and how he is great in these things.

Acting Like The Summer Aint Mine (overdue mix)

Hey it's the middle of winter, so why not listen to this mix of last summer's Summer JAMS I made like six months ago but forgot to share with anyone until now!
(If the embedded player thing doesn't work, click here to listen. (I don't have spotify.))

Sleepy Age

Every time I see these guys play I found myself dancing like Thom Yorke's drunk uncle. Plus for their live-show they've just added three "sassy gurls" on backing vocals which is something every band needs.

Get their stuff on bandcamp, why not.

Oh hey I made this poster and I kinda like it.
Also I've finished my semester and I'm free and the sun is shining!

Worlds Still Be Colliding

Remember Team Perfect? Well Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange) & Florence Welch have teamed up again, and created this AMAZING remix/cover/duet of Florence's song "Never Let Me Go". It's a gorgeous, Prince-esque slow burner and the fact it exists makes me really happy and really really jealous of my friends who are going to see both of them in Auckland on Monday...

After another aaamaazingg weekend in Dunedin, I'd been kinda unsure of whether Christchurch could still party, but then on friday night Manu and I went out to a gig and came back looking like this...

A very important Corgi being vacuumed video

If a tree falls in a forest, and that tree is a video of a corgi being vacuumed or playing some sort of sport, I will hear it.

Jam master James

A while ago, (after we adopted Alejandro) I asked James Barron, my awesome friend and most of my blog audience, if he could give me some songs he'd think I'd enjoy. Not content with making a mere-mortal mix CD, he responded by spending a month making me an 18-track concept mix-album of awesome songs across all genres, with fully designed, interchangeable album art featuring AMAZING vector-art (James, the back cover picture is my favourite thing ever). He put more effort into it than most bands!
Here's one of my favourite tracks:

The Perfect Music Video

Since 1983, when Micheal Jackson was attacked by zombies and became a zombie but was also a werewolf or something, man has dreamed of making the perfect music video.
Today, it has happened.

You're welcome, universe.

Oh hello Alejandro

Alejandro is the 5-foot something Papier-mâché skeleton man my friends James, Manu and I adopted from the back of every grandmother's favourite arts and craft shop, Spotlight. We don't know anything about him or who made him, but my assumption is he's an immortal Aztec prince who witnessed the fall of his empire, before being rescued and raised by a voodoo priest in New Orleans during the Roaring Twenties. Pretty sure he also was at Woodstock and had something to do with the production of the film El Topo. These are some photos of him during his big day out, in which we carried him from Sydenham to Papanui, ignoring the confused glances of other Christchurch residents.

I like this artist: Hanksy

"Hanksy" is an anonymous New York based  street artist who produces parodies of Banksy's iconic works mashed-up with pictures and references to actor Tom Hanks. Best idea ever? Best idea ever.
Apparently both Tom Hanks and Banksy are aware of and enjoy Hanksy's work, and the artist has recently branched out toward different actors and pop-culture references, but still keeping the glorious love of puns that inspired the original work.

Read an interview with Hanksy by EA Hanks, who happens to be Tom Hanks' daughter, here.

Back to School!

Tomorrow I start the third and final year of my course! This summer break turned out way better than I expected it to, after a rough start, it may have been one of my favourite summers yet. Here's hoping the rest of the year goes this way too!

Gorrilaz + James Murphy + Andre 3000 are making a song together!!

This news made me so excited I died and went to heaven but found out it wasn't my time yet so was sent back to Earth but in the body of an elderly rich white man only to be killed again by the man's scheming wife and assistant, then reincarnated again in the body of someone pretty much exactly the same as me or something.
Anyway, this dream track, called DoYaThing, comes out on February 23rd and will be a free download as part of Converse's "3 Artists, 1 Song" thing that I've previously ranted about. So stay tuned for more news, and less rubbish movie analogies!
