Champagne Champagne These guys are cool because: 1. Their DJ is Mark Gajadhar, former drummer for The Blood Brothers and Neon Blonde 2. Repetition in band names is always cool 3. They have a song about Molly Ringwald. Sigh... Anyway, check out their myspace page here, or watch a video of them performing in a taxi here. (What a cool idea, from now on I'm only gonna pay my taxi fare through sweet rhymes!)
One of my favourite things is sunny days in winter. Even though it's waaay less warm than in summer, since the sun is much rarer you feel like "Omg I must take full advantage of this beautiful day!" unlike in summer where I commonly open the curtain and scream "Are you still here?? No-one invited you! You're not my real dad!" at the sun before nursing my terrible sunburns*.
Also great about winter is that since summer is happening in America, we get a fresh shipment of America's SUMMER JAMS to make our few sunny days even better. On the subject of SUMMER JAMS, here's Converse's new collaboration song. It's by Kid Cudi (rapper, hence why I can include it), Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend and Best Coast, an artist I havent heard before but will probably hear more of soon. Check it:
It's so good it doesnt matter it's secretly a shoe ad! A very effective shoe ad, cause after downloading it at converse.com I looked around the website and ended up designing these on the site: Omg shoes. Lets get some shoes. These guys know what I'm talking about.
Just found this drawing in a cabinet. Drew it back in January after buying my Dad a birthday present. I have no idea what was going through my head when I made it, but I remember having a really good day when I did :)
"That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "Fuck you." I'm positive, in fact."
P.S Apparently next semester we're learing to draw faces. I think I need that
This is something I ran on my facebook during March, until I realised people probably didnt want the whitest, geekiest guy they know talking about rap all over their newsfeed. But since no-one reads this, I feel I can officially "rap it up" without annoying anyone too much :D
Anyway, today I recommend Tommy Ill! One of the only NZ rappers that doesnt make me cringe and the only rapper I've seen live, Mr Ill mixes unlikely samples with clever, self deprecating lyrics about Pokémon, hangovers and kinda ironic sounding call outs to other rappers ("I was speeding down the road, just trying to get back until I heard somebody yelling now "Savage, where the chorus at?"). Check him out at tommyill.com and download the free "Day We Became Models" Ep, cause you know you've always wanted to hear a hip hop mash-up of AC/DC and Cold War Kids.
One of my year 12 compositions, and the first particularly "good" song I've written by myself. Influenced by the Cure, Muse and the Dresden Dolls (although you can hear influence from dance music too), by hope for this track was it would create musical genre known as "fairy rave". Still waiting for this to happen.
